Helicopter Bosses?

helicopterI’ve heard of helicopter parents, who “hover” over their children, doing things children can (and should) do for themselves, but I had never heard of helicopter bosses.

But I can see the points Jesse Lyn Stoner is making in Are Your Millennial Employees Turning You Into a Helicopter Manager? Of course, not all Millennials* are alike, just as not all of us boomers are alike! But it is a very different world, in which many children grow up believing “everyone gets a trophy” as Stoner describes in a story in the article. So if you find yourself managing Millennials, whether in a library, or another setting, you might want to ask yourself if you’re hovering. And if you are, you might want to try out the tips Stoner suggests.

(*Millennials (also known as the Millennial Generation or Generation Y) are the demographic cohort following Generation X. There are no precise dates when the generation starts and ends; most researchers and commentators use birth years ranging from the early 1980s to the early 2000s.—Wikipedia.)
